Pune Metro Line 3 To Open Soon With Four New Parking Lots

Pune is gearing up for a major mobility boost as the first phase of the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3, connecting Hinjawadi to Baner, is expected to be operational within the next two to three months. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced the development of four dedicated parking facilities along the route to enhance commuter convenience and support last-mile connectivity.

The civic body has approved parking developments at Balewadi Amar Tech Park, Balewadi Iris Society, Baner Cosmos Society, and near ABZ in Baner. Each site will be strategically located within 200–400 metres of nearby metro stations, enabling seamless access for passengers. According to senior PMC officials, the initiative aims to reduce roadside congestion and promote the use of public transport in Pune’s rapidly expanding western corridor.

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), which is executing the 23-km Metro Line 3 project, had initially identified eight potential sites for commuter parking. After thorough assessment, PMC approved four of these for immediate development, with the remaining locations to be reconsidered based on commuter demand once the full corridor becomes operational.Officials confirmed that PMC will undertake the infrastructure development independently. The operation and maintenance framework whether managed by PMC or transferred to the metro operator will be finalised through inter-agency consultations.

The civic body will determine the parking tariffs and, if managed by the metro operator, will charge a rental fee to ensure sustainable revenue flow. The parking lots are envisioned as part of a broader transit-oriented development (TOD) strategy that integrates multi-modal transport solutions. Urban mobility experts believe this step will significantly encourage residents to switch from private vehicles to public transport, cutting carbon emissions and improving air quality in Pune. “By ensuring that metro stations are supported by parking and feeder connectivity, the city can advance towards its goal of a low-carbon, commuter-friendly future,” an urban transport planner said.

The Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro, developed under a public-private partnership model, is expected to transform Pune’s western business district connectivity. Once fully operational, the corridor will connect key employment hubs, residential areas, and educational institutions, reducing travel time and dependence on private vehicles. The project aligns with Pune’s long-term mobility vision of building sustainable infrastructure while easing traffic congestion in tech-heavy corridors. The Metro Line 3 and its supporting facilities are seen as crucial steps towards creating a cleaner, more efficient, and inclusive urban transport ecosystem. With the upcoming launch, the city’s residents can look forward to a smoother and more sustainable commute marking another milestone in Pune’s journey towards
