The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has assumed responsibility for the repair and upkeep of roads along the Pune Metro Line 3 corridor.
This decision comes after the original contractor, a consortium of TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited (TATA Group) and Siemens Project Ventures, failed to meet repair deadlines set by the PMRDA. The affected stretch includes key areas such as Ganeshkhind Road, Baner, and Shivajinagar, where commuters have reported deteriorating road conditions, including potholes and uneven surfaces. These issues have raised concerns about safety and accessibility, particularly for daily commuters and residents.
PMRDA Commissioner emphasized that the agency had previously issued notices and set deadlines for the contractor to complete the necessary repairs. However, due to non-compliance, the PMRDA has now appointed a contractor to undertake the road repair work directly. The cost of these repairs will be recovered from the Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL), the implementing agency for Metro Line 3, as stipulated in the project’s agreement. In a related development, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) imposed a fine of ₹13.70 lakh on the PMRDA for road damage caused during metro construction on Ganeshkhind Road. The PMC attributed the damage to metro works, along with drainage and sewer repairs, and has taken action against the contractor responsible for the road damage.
The Pune Metro Line 3 project, spanning approximately 23 kilometers, passes through multiple jurisdictions, including PMC, PCMC, and Hinjewadi Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). The route covers key areas such as Balewadi Stadium, NICMAR, Ram Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Baner, Sakal Nagar, University, RBI, Agriculture College, Shivajinagar, and Civil Court. The line is expected to significantly enhance connectivity in the region, particularly between the IT hub of Hinjewadi and the city center. The PMRDA’s proactive approach aims to ensure that road conditions are improved and maintained, minimizing disruptions for commuters and supporting the timely completion of the metro project. By taking direct control of the road repair work, the PMRDA seeks to uphold its commitment to quality infrastructure and public safety.
This development underscores the importance of accountability and timely execution in large-scale urban infrastructure projects. As Pune continues to expand and modernize its public transport systems, effective coordination and oversight will be crucial to meeting the city’s growing mobility needs.
