Pune Metro Line 3 Faces Further Delay to March 2026

Pune Metro Line 3, connecting Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar, has been delayed once again. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has officially extended the project’s deadline to March 2026. The 23-kilometre elevated metro corridor, costing ₹7,420 crore, is being implemented on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis by the Tata Group through the PMRDA. The consortium of Trail Urban Transport Private Limited and Siemens Project Ventures has been entrusted with the project execution, while Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL) is responsible for its implementation.

The metro line will feature 23 stations along its route and is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion between Pune’s IT hub in Hinjawadi and the busy Shivajinagar area. However, the project has faced multiple delays due to various challenges. Key reasons behind the repeated delays include hurdles in land acquisition, disruptions caused by VIP movement on Ganeshkhind Road, delays in shifting utility service lines, agitation by gravel suppliers, and delays in securing various administrative permissions. Originally slated for completion in March 2025, the deadline was first pushed to September 2025 and has now been extended to March 2026.

Meanwhile, the work on the city’s first double-decker bridge at Anand Rishiji Maharaj Chowk near Savitribai Phule Pune University, which will accommodate a metro station above the vehicular flyover, has also been extended. This flyover is now expected to be completed by October 30 this year. The repeated delays have raised concerns among commuters and stakeholders about the project’s ability to meet its revised deadlines. However, PMRDA officials remain optimistic, citing the progress made so far and the measures being taken to address the challenges.

As Pune continues to grapple with traffic congestion, the timely completion of the metro project remains a priority for the city’s development. The extended deadline provides an opportunity to address the existing challenges and ensure the successful implementation of the metro line, which is expected to transform urban mobility in Pune.
