In a strategic move towards enhancing Pune’s metropolitan transport infrastructure, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is meticulously evaluating the extension of Metro Line 3 to Loni Kalbhor.
The proposed extension, intended to bolster connectivity between Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar, marks a pivotal step in PMRDA’s pursuit of bolstering public transit solutions within the region. Rinaj Pathan, Chief Engineer at PMRDA “The Metro line is going to be extended till Loni Kalbhor. However, the government is yet to decide whether the extension should be done by either PMRDA or Maha Metro. We have got the feasibility report for the extension through our appointed consultant on PPP basis. Extensions of Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor, along with Pulgate to Swargate, are feasible on PPP basis. The proposal for the same will soon be sent to the state government after which the authority to execute the extension will be decided.” The extension project encompasses a comprehensive stretch from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor, extending the existing metro corridor by 23 kilometres. Concurrently, proposals for additional routes linking Hadapsar to Saswad road and Race course to Swargate have been tabled, further augmenting the scope and efficacy of Pune’s burgeoning metro network.
Integral to this deliberation process was the directive issued during the Pune Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA) meeting, wherein the imperative for a unified agency to oversee the extension initiative was underscored. Consequently, PMRDA, in adherence to the directive, engaged a consultancy firm to meticulously evaluate the economic viability of executing the project via PPP, affirming its commitment to fostering sustainable urban mobility solutions. As the proposal traverses the bureaucratic corridors awaiting final endorsement, stakeholders await with bated breath, envisioning the transformative impact that the expanded metro network will impart on Pune’s burgeoning urban landscape.
