Pune’s transformative Metro Line 3, connecting the bustling Hinjewadi IT Park to Shivajinagar, has successfully completed its second trial run on a 4-kilometre stretch between Maan Depot and station PMR04. This critical milestone brings the 23.3-kilometre fully elevated corridor closer to its anticipated commercial operation date in March 2026. The advancement signifies a major leap towards enhancing sustainable urban mobility, promising to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and foster a more eco-friendly, equitable, and efficient public transport system for the city’s burgeoning population.
The recent trial, conducted at a speed of 40 kilometres per hour, was a crucial test of the track and system readiness, building upon an earlier trial run this month. With 88 per cent of the project now complete, officials confirm that a series of further trials are planned, meticulously preparing the line for its commissioning. This rigorous testing protocol underscores the commitment to safety and operational excellence, ensuring that the new transit system adheres to the highest international standards, which is paramount for building public trust and ensuring the long-term viability of urban infrastructure projects.
Developed under a robust Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model between the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd, led by the Tata Group, Metro Line 3 is poised to revolutionise commuting in one of India’s fastest-growing urban centres. Once operational, the line will feature 23 stations, offering seamless connectivity with existing Metro lines. This integration aims to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility along the city’s bustling IT corridor, providing a greener alternative to private vehicles and contributing to reduced carbon emissions.
The project has already received five modern train sets, manufactured by Alstom, each comprising three fully air-conditioned coaches capable of carrying approximately 1,000 passengers. These trains are designed to operate at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, utilising a 750V DC third-rail electrification system for smooth and energy-efficient transit. Furthermore, the corridor will employ Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology, renowned for enhancing safety, reliability, and frequency of Metro services, ensuring a world-class travel experience for all commuters.
The progress of Pune Metro Line 3 is a testament to the city’s strategic vision for sustainable urban development.
