In a strategic push for Pune’s urban mobility, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol has proposed two crucial metro corridors—Katraj to Hinjewadi and Kharadi to Pune International Airport—aiming to enhance the city’s public transport infrastructure. At a high-level meeting with Pune Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale and Maha-Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar, the minister directed the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for these corridors. The expansion is poised to bridge key transit gaps in Pune, catering to the needs of thousands of daily commuters while reducing road congestion.

Mohol emphasised that the Kharadi-Airport metro stretch should be seamlessly integrated into the larger Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi metro route, ensuring smooth connectivity from the city’s periphery to the airport. The proposal also includes an ambitious plan for a multimodal transport hub at Kharadi, which will serve as a critical junction linking multiple transport systems. Once operational, this hub is expected to improve last-mile connectivity for commuters from areas such as Chandani Chowk, Wagholi, Nigdi, Swargate, Shivajinagar, Hinjewadi, Khadakwasla, and Hadapsar, further strengthening Pune’s transit network.

Urban mobility and infrastructure transformation

The proposed metro expansion marks a significant milestone in Pune’s efforts to modernise its public transportation system. With rapid urbanisation and increasing vehicular congestion, metro rail infrastructure is emerging as a crucial solution for decongesting Pune’s overburdened road network. The Katraj-Hinjewadi metro corridor, in particular, will provide relief to one of Pune’s busiest IT and residential corridors, reducing reliance on private vehicles and easing daily commute times for thousands of professionals and residents.

Additionally, Mohol has proposed a metro corridor featuring a double-decker flyover between Vanaz and Chandani Chowk to further ease traffic congestion. This design follows the successful implementation of a similar structure at Nal Stop, which has proven effective in streamlining traffic flow. The introduction of another double-decker flyover could significantly enhance Pune’s urban road infrastructure by integrating metro and vehicular movement in a space-efficient manner. Comparatively, metro projects in Delhi and Bengaluru have witnessed similar urban planning innovations, which have led to improved traffic management and reduced travel time for commuters.

Sustainability and environmental impact

As Pune scales up its metro network, sustainability remains at the core of the expansion strategy. Metro systems are globally recognised for their low carbon footprint, as they significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuel-driven vehicles. The introduction of metro corridors across Pune is expected to curtail vehicular emissions, a critical move considering the city’s rising air pollution levels. Studies have shown that metro projects can lead to a 30-40% reduction in vehicular congestion, directly impacting fuel consumption and air quality.

Furthermore, integrating metro lines with multimodal transport hubs, such as the proposed Kharadi facility, will encourage more residents to shift from personal vehicles to public transport. Sustainable urban planning measures, such as energy-efficient metro stations, rainwater harvesting systems, and solar-powered depots, could further enhance the metro’s environmental impact. Taking inspiration from Mumbai Metro and Kochi Metro—both of which have incorporated solar panels and green-building practices—Pune’s metro expansion has the potential to set a benchmark for eco-friendly transit development in Maharashtra.

Civic impact and public expectations

While the expansion plan presents a promising future for Pune’s transport ecosystem, challenges remain in its execution. Metro projects often face hurdles related to land acquisition, cost escalation, and delays in project completion. Pune’s existing metro network has seen multiple timeline extensions, and ensuring the timely execution of the proposed routes will be a key concern for authorities. Additionally, the feasibility of the double-decker flyover plan, which aims to integrate metro and road traffic, requires detailed urban planning to avoid construction bottlenecks.

Public accessibility and affordability will also be critical factors in determining the success of the metro expansion. The pricing strategy should cater to daily commuters while maintaining financial sustainability for the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro). Ensuring last-mile connectivity—through feeder bus services, pedestrian-friendly access, and seamless interchange facilities—will further dictate the effectiveness of the new metro corridors.

With Pune’s rapid urban growth, the metro expansion project presents an opportunity to redefine the city’s mobility landscape. If implemented efficiently, the proposed Katraj-Hinjewadi and Kharadi-Airport metro lines could significantly improve urban transit, reduce traffic congestion, and contribute to a more sustainable and connected Pune.
