Pune Metro Expansion Forces Closure of Kothrud Garbage Ramp

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is confronting significant logistical challenges following the closure of the Kothrud garbage segregation ramp to facilitate the expansion of the Pune Metro.

This move, aimed at advancing urban mobility, has disrupted the city’s waste management operations, particularly affecting the Warje and Karve Nagar areas, which collectively generate approximately 185 tonnes of segregated wet and dry waste daily. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro) has requisitioned the entire Kothrud garbage depot land for the development of a Metro depot, including the land previously utilised for waste segregation. This decision aligns with the ongoing Vanaz–Chandani Chowk Metro extension project, which is currently pending final approval from the central government .

In response, the PMC initiated plans to establish a new waste segregation centre on a 40-guntha plot in Bavdhan. However, this site falls within the funnel zone of the NDA airport, necessitating clearance from the Ministry of Defence before construction can commence. As of now, the PMC is awaiting approval, leaving the project in limbo . Concurrently, the PMC is exploring the possibility of redirecting Kothrud’s waste to existing segregation ramps at Aundh and Ghole Road. However, both centres are already operating at full capacity, and accommodating additional waste would exacerbate operational pressures and increase transportation costs .

The closure of the Kothrud garbage ramp underscores the complexities of urban development, where infrastructure projects, such as the Metro expansion, intersect with essential civic services like waste management. While the Metro project promises to enhance urban mobility, it also necessitates careful planning to ensure that other services are not compromised. The PMC’s current predicament highlights the need for integrated urban planning that considers the multifaceted requirements of a growing city. As Pune continues to expand, it is imperative that infrastructure developments are harmonised with the city’s waste management strategies to maintain public health and environmental sustainability.
