To address persistent concerns over overcrowding and inconsistent public transport services, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has initiated a comprehensive survey across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to identify key commuter zones. The survey aims to provide demand-based, dedicated bus services to high-traffic locations, including malls, schools, hospitals, tourist spots, and major employment hubs.
The initiative follows mounting pressure to enhance last-mile connectivity and ease daily commuting struggles faced by residents. According to officials, Pune houses over 100 shopping malls, more than 450 educational institutions, and upwards of 200 hospitals. Many of these locations, while technically on PMPML routes, continue to experience service delays and crowding during peak hours. Public transport experts noted that this targeted approach is a crucial step towards creating a more sustainable and equitable mobility system. The agency is also preparing to induct 600 new buses into its fleet, with 85 already in operation. Of these, 200 will be directly owned by PMPML, offering greater flexibility in route planning.
Officials confirmed that high-footfall areas like Phoenix Market City, Amanora Mall, and public heritage sites such as Shaniwarwada, Aga Khan Palace, and Sinhagad Fort will receive special attention. In addition to the public destinations, PMPML is also working with private IT firms and corporate parks to design dedicated routes that align with office schedules, particularly in congested corridors like Magarpatta and Hinjewadi. Residents welcomed the development. An official from PMPML stated that based on survey feedback, agreements will be forged with institutions to run targeted services that are efficient, timely, and user-friendly.
While the rollout is expected to be gradual, it marks a strategic effort to modernise Pune’s public transport infrastructure. The goal is not just to manage passenger loads but to future-proof the system in view of the city’s rapid urban expansion and growing environmental concerns. The survey is seen as a foundational step in building a transport network that is not only responsive but also inclusive and climate-conscious.
