Pune IT Workers Demand Work From Home Amid Monsoon Chaos

The relentless monsoon rains, IT professionals in Pune’s Hinjawadi area are voicing urgent demands for work-from-home (WFH) arrangements.

The persistent waterlogging, particularly in Phase 3, coupled with ongoing metro construction, has led to severe traffic congestion, making daily commutes hazardous and time-consuming. The Forum of IT Employees (FITE) has appealed to state authorities, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and MP Supriya Sule, urging them to implement mandatory WFH policies for the duration of the rainy season. Sharing videos of submerged streets and stalled traffic, FITE highlighted the perilous conditions employees face daily.

Pawanjit Mane, a member of FITE, emphasized the dire situation, stating, “It takes up to 2–3 hours for employees working at Hinjawadi and Baner to get back home during rainfall.” Despite these challenges, many companies have yet to adopt flexible work policies, leaving employees to navigate the treacherous conditions. The Hinjawadi area, home to over 240,000 daily commuters, has long struggled with inadequate infrastructure. The lack of coordination among various authorities has exacerbated the situation, leading to deteriorating road conditions and frequent flooding. These issues have prompted several companies to relocate, raising concerns about Pune’s competitiveness as an IT hub.

Industry representatives argue that addressing these infrastructure challenges is crucial not only for employee safety but also for sustaining Pune’s position as a leading IT destination. They advocate for comprehensive urban planning that includes efficient drainage systems, improved road networks, and reliable public transportation options. As the monsoon continues, the demand for remote work options grows louder. Employees are calling on employers and policymakers to prioritize their well-being and consider long-term solutions to the region’s infrastructural woes. The situation underscores the need for sustainable urban development that can withstand the challenges posed by climate change and rapid urbanization.
