Pune Introduces ₹500 Fine for Waste Segregation Violations

Pune, 19 August 2024: In a bid to tackle the escalating issue of illegal waste dumping, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has implemented a new regulation imposing a ₹500 fine on waste pickers who fail to use designated waste segregation points. This policy aims to enhance waste management practices and curb the growing problem of trash being disposed of in unauthorized locations.

The PMC’s Solid Waste Management Department has stressed the importance of compliance with designated segregation points. According to the head of the department, “We have established specific feeder points for waste segregation. It is imperative that waste pickers utilise these designated areas. Non-compliance will attract penalties,” he asserted. This initiative comes in response to numerous complaints from residents about improper waste disposal. The new fines will apply not only to PMC conservancy staff but also to waste pickers employed by private agencies. Enforcement of this policy will be supported by the PMC’s ‘Public Health & Sanitation By-Laws 2017,’ which delineates the responsibilities of waste generators, corporations, agents, and operators.

Under the by-laws, waste generators are required to segregate their waste at the source and use separate receptacles for different types of waste. Furthermore, segregated waste must not be mixed before collection by the corporation or authorised agencies. “The by-laws are designed to ensure efficient waste management from source to disposal,” explained the department head. “We urge all waste pickers and residents to adhere to these guidelines to help maintain the city’s cleanliness and hygiene.” The introduction of fines represents a significant step by the PMC to reinforce waste segregation practices and improve overall waste management in Pune.
