Pune Infrastructure Budget Targets Roads And Tunnels

Pune’s municipal administration has unveiled an ambitious civic spending plan aimed at easing traffic congestion and strengthening urban connectivity, with a major financial push toward road infrastructure and mobility systems. The newly presented civic budget places a strong emphasis on large-scale projects such as tunnels, flyovers and missing road links, signalling the city’s attempt to keep pace with rapid population growth and expanding real estate development. The Pune infrastructure budget outlines one of the largest financial commitments made by the municipal corporation toward the road network in recent years. Officials have earmarked more than ₹1,800 crore for road-related works, including capital investments for new corridors, junction improvements and the completion of long-pending connectivity projects across both established neighbourhoods and newly incorporated villages.

Urban administrators say the funding is designed to support construction of around 65 kilometres of additional road infrastructure. Alongside new corridors, the programme includes work on land acquisition, footpath development and upgrading road utilities to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and motorists.
A senior civic official familiar with the plan said the Pune infrastructure budget also proposes the creation of a dedicated Urban Mobility Cell. The unit is expected to coordinate traffic planning across agencies, an effort seen as essential in a city where metro expansion, road construction and population growth are unfolding simultaneously. Among the most notable projects proposed are two underground road tunnels intended to reduce travel times across congested hills and arterial corridors. Urban planners say such projects are increasingly being explored in Indian cities where geographical barriers and dense construction limit the possibility of traditional road widening.

The civic body has also set aside hundreds of crores for grade separators, flyovers and junction improvements across major traffic corridors. Several projects are aimed at improving east-west and north-south connectivity an issue that continues to shape commuting patterns in Pune’s rapidly expanding urban region. Infrastructure already under construction is also expected to receive continued funding support. Bridge links and major junction upgrades currently underway are scheduled to be completed over the next two years, which officials believe will ease traffic flow in high-density residential and commercial zones.
Beyond road infrastructure, the Pune infrastructure budget also includes provisions linked to urban sustainability and civic services. Work on the long-planned rejuvenation of the Mula–Mutha riverfront corridor is progressing across multiple stretches, with certain segments expected to open before the monsoon season.

Meanwhile, the civic body has initiated a digital mapping system for parking spaces using geographic information technology. The system aims to allow residents to locate available parking areas through online platforms, potentially reducing roadside congestion in crowded commercial districts.
Safety measures have also been prioritised. Structural audits of dozens of bridges and flyovers have been carried out, prompting repair work on ageing structures to improve long-term resilience of the transport network. Urban development analysts say the scale of the Pune infrastructure budget reflects the pressures facing India’s fastest-growing cities. As Pune continues to attract investment in technology, manufacturing and housing, transport infrastructure will play a central role in determining how efficiently the city can grow.
The effectiveness of the new spending programme will ultimately depend on execution timelines, land acquisition progress and coordination with metro and regional transport systems. For residents and businesses alike, the coming years will reveal whether these infrastructure commitments translate into faster, safer and more sustainable urban mobility.
