Pune Implements Safety Overhaul at Vulnerable Tourist Spots

In response to recent tragic incidents, including the drowning of five family members at Bhushi Dam on June 30, the Pune district collector has issued a comprehensive directive aimed at enhancing safety protocols at popular tourist destinations across the district. The move follows directives from the Chief Minister and a subsequent video conference with the Chief Secretary on July 1, emphasizing proactive measures to prevent similar mishaps during the monsoon season.

The collector’s order mandates sub-divisional officers to establish clear control perimeters at rivers, lakes, dams, waterfalls, forts, and forests prone to hazards. These control lines are intended to prevent tourists from entering risky areas, supported by prominent signage indicating restricted zones. Immediate closure of areas deemed unsafe, such as mountains, waterfalls, and streams where preventive measures are impractical, has also been ordered, with strict enforcement by local authorities.

Specific measures outlined in the order include enhanced monitoring and regulation of visitor traffic at high-footfall tourist spots like Bhushi Dam, Lonavla, Sinhagad, Malshej Ghat, and Tamhini Ghat. The directive further addresses road safety concerns due to heavy tourist traffic, stressing the removal of unauthorized constructions and encroachments near these attractions. Restrictions on visitor timings, particularly after sunset, are also stipulated to mitigate risks effectively.Sub-divisional magistrates have been designated as local disaster management authorities, tasked with coordinating multi-departmental efforts to implement these safety measures rigorously. The order underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring visitor safety amidst the scenic yet challenging terrain of Pune’s monsoon destinations.
