Pune Grapples with 20-Hour Power Outages Post Heavy Rainfall

Pune experienced a tumultuous start to the monsoon season as heavy rainfall, preceding the arrival of the southwest monsoon, led to significant power outages spanning over 20 hours in various parts of the city. Despite the early onset of the monsoon, the aftermath of the downpour left residents frustrated and authorities scrambling to restore normalcy.

Following Saturday’s deluge, which saw Lohegaon receiving 115.6mm of rainfall, many areas in Pune were plunged into darkness due to prolonged power disruptions. Residents reported facing electricity shortages for extended periods, with some enduring over 20 hours without power supply.

Numerous complaints poured in from affected residents, highlighting their struggles to reach authorities for assistance. From NIBM Road to Parvati, and even affluent areas like Koregaon Park, residents grappled with the aftermath of the heavy rain as power remained elusive for hours on end.

Residents expressed dismay over the lack of response from utility providers, citing difficulties in reaching out for help. Despite attempts to lodge complaints via social media platforms, many encountered automated responses or non-functional contact numbers, exacerbating the already dire situation.

Authorities attributed the widespread power outages to various factors, including exposed cables, falling trees on transformers, and waterlogging. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) acknowledged the challenges faced in restoring power, citing obstacles such as exposed cables and transformer malfunctions due to moisture.

Efforts to rectify the situation were hindered by logistical challenges, including waterlogged areas and severe traffic congestion, which delayed the deployment of technicians and engineers to affected locations.

While Sunday saw subdued rainfall compared to the previous day’s downpour, the lingering effects of Saturday’s heavy rain continued to disrupt normalcy in Pune. With the monsoon season underway, residents and authorities remain vigilant as they navigate the challenges posed by inclement weather conditions.
