Pune Government Announces Timelines For Major Flyovers And Elevated Corridor Projects

Pune is set to witness transformative upgrades in its urban transport network as the Centre outlines timelines for key flyovers, elevated corridors, and highway expansion projects. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari shared progress updates in the Rajya Sabha, emphasising that these initiatives aim to alleviate persistent traffic congestion, enhance commuter safety, and bolster long-term connectivity along major National Highways intersecting the metropolitan region.

The completed Chandani Chowk integrated structures on NH-48 marked the first milestone in March 2024, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated infrastructure delivery. The six-lane flyover at Katraj Junction on NH-548DD is scheduled for completion by June 2026, while service and slip road concreting along the 41 km Pune–Satara stretch of NH-48 is projected to finish by June 2027. The largest undertaking the 30 km elevated corridor between Nashik Phata and Khed on NH-60 has a target completion in March 2030, reflecting long-term planning for high-capacity urban mobility.

Officials highlight that feasibility studies have commenced for an additional elevated corridor connecting Ravet and Narhe on NH-48, signalling further expansion potential in Pune’s growing transport framework. Parallel agreements with the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) are being explored for capacity upgrades on Pune–Shirur (NH-753F), Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur (NH-548D), and Hadapsar–Yavat (NH-65). Decisions on these projects will follow detailed technical assessments to ensure safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency.

Traffic planners note that such interventions are critical in a rapidly expanding metropolitan area where urban sprawl, population growth, and economic activity increasingly strain road infrastructure. Integrated flyovers and elevated corridors not only reduce bottlenecks but also support equitable access by connecting residential, commercial, and industrial hubs efficiently. Industry experts emphasise the importance of incorporating sustainable materials, energy-efficient lighting, and inclusive design features to align infrastructure development with Pune’s net-zero and climate-resilient urban goals.

Coordination among multiple agencies including NHAI, Pune Municipal Corporation, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority is central to ensuring timely execution. Regular inter-agency meetings are being conducted to address technical, logistical, and regulatory challenges, reinforcing accountability and operational transparency.Urban mobility specialists suggest that while these projects will significantly ease commuter stress, integrating last-mile connectivity and public transport links remains vital. Pune’s roadmap for flyovers and elevated corridors represents a strategic step toward a sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready transport network capable of accommodating the city’s evolving mobility needs.
