Pune Ghat Areas See Rainfall Pick Up IMD Warns of Further Intensification

Pune’s ghat areas have experienced a significant surge in rainfall over the last 24 hours, following a period of subdued showers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts further intensification, issuing orange and yellow alerts for the district in the coming days. This renewed precipitation is vital for replenishing water reservoirs and supporting regional needs.

The rainfall surge was particularly noticeable in Tamhini, which recorded 92mm of showers by Sunday morning, a stark increase from 11mm on Saturday. Other ghat locations like Bhira and Dungerwadi reported 53mm each, while Davdi received 48mm, indicating a broader pick-up in intensity across the higher elevations. In contrast, Pune city areas such as Shivajinagar and Chinchwad recorded no rain, with only negligible showers in locations like Lavale and Koregaon Park. The IMD has extended a yellow alert for Monday and Tuesday for Pune’s ghat areas, with a subsequent orange alert for Wednesday and Thursday, anticipating heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Similar alerts have been issued for several other districts across Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and parts of Vidarbha, signaling widespread rainfall activity across the state. This increased precipitation is being driven by an active monsoon trough and a well-marked low-pressure area over west Rajasthan. Despite the ghat region’s improved rainfall, catchment areas of dams supplying water to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas received minimal showers; Khadakwasla and Varsgaon recorded no rain, while Panshet and Temghar saw only 1mm and 2mm respectively. Currently, the four dams collectively hold around 22.99 TMC of water, representing about 78.87% of their total capacity.

The renewed rainfall in Pune’s vital ghat areas marks a positive shift for the region’s water reserves. As IMD forecasts further intensification, these showers are critical for replenishing dams and supporting agricultural activities. Continued monitoring of weather systems remains essential for managing potential impacts and ensuring the well-being of the district.
