The Maharashtra government has granted approval to four preliminary Town Planning (TP) schemes prepared by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), significantly accelerating development in adjacent villages. This pivotal decision enables the immediate development of approximately 6.8 kilometres of the crucial Ring Road, marking a substantial step towards fostering a more organised, sustainable, and equitably developed urban landscape around Pune.
These TP schemes are instrumental in facilitating the planned growth of areas within PMRDA’s jurisdiction and ensuring a streamlined process for land acquisition necessary for the ambitious Ring Road project. The state government’s final approval covers schemes in Wadachiwadi, Autade-Handewadi, and two for Holkarwadi, alongside the inclusion of a scheme for Fursungi, now under Pune Municipal Corporation limits. This comprehensive approach aims to bring structure to previously unplanned expansions, mitigating issues of haphazard development and ensuring essential infrastructure keeps pace with urbanisation.
Following this state approval, PMRDA has swiftly moved into the next phase of implementation, commencing land acquisition in close consultation with relevant stakeholders. Furthermore, public notifications have been issued for an additional 15 newly proposed TP schemes. These new schemes are specifically designed to acquire land for a 65-meter-wide Ring Road, a vital artery that will significantly improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance logistical efficiency across the Pune Metropolitan Region.
Dr. Yogesh Mhase, Metropolitan Commissioner, PMRDA, affirmed that decisions for these newly proposed 15 schemes will be made in active consultation with local representatives and farmers. Village-wise meetings are planned to gather suggestions and finalise detailed planning accordingly. This emphasis on community engagement is crucial for ensuring that development is inclusive, respects local needs, and minimises displacement, contributing to a more gender-neutral and equitable urbanisation process.
The approval of these TP schemes is a critical enabler for the region’s sustainable development. By facilitating planned land use and infrastructure provision, they will contribute to reducing urban sprawl, preserving green spaces, and optimising resource utilisation, aligning with zero-net-carbon and eco-friendly city principles. A well-planned Ring Road and integrated urban development will also lead to more efficient transportation, lower vehicular emissions, and improved air quality, fostering a healthier environment for Pune’s burgeoning population. This strategic planning ensures that Pune’s growth is not just rapid, but also resilient and beneficial for all its inhabitants.
