Pune is experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring beyond seasonal norms, leading to health advisories and increased demand for water.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has enforced rotational water supply schedules in several areas due to reservoir depletion. Affected areas include Katraj, Sahakarnagar, Dhankawadi, Ambegaon, Hingne, Vadgaon Budruk, Kondhwa, and Balajinagar. Water cuts will be implemented every Thursday for the next several weeks, urging citizens to store water and use it judiciously. In response to the water crisis, PMC is expediting its 24×7 water supply project, aiming for completion by December 2025. The project involves the installation of water meters and the development of a comprehensive distribution network. As of now, 79 of the 82 overhead tanks are operational, and approximately 700 km of the 1,060 km distribution line has been laid. The project is expected to enhance water management and billing transparency across the city.
Meanwhile, Pune is witnessing significant developments in its infrastructure sector. The Pune Metro Line-3, connecting Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar, is 82% complete, with major progress in duct installation, railway track laying, and construction of metro stations. However, construction at critical locations, including Baner, Sakalnagar, and Civil Court, is still ongoing due to delays in land acquisition and necessary approvals. The project, initially set for completion in March 2025, has been extended to September 2025. Additionally, the redevelopment of Pune Junction is underway, aiming to decongest the station and modernize passenger facilities. The project will include the development of commercial spaces, food courts, and retail outlets, making the station a vibrant and multifaceted hub for travelers and visitors alike. The redevelopment also emphasizes preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of the station.
In other news, a leopard sighting near Pune Airport has raised security concerns, prompting authorities to increase vigilance in the area. Residents are advised to stay alert and report any wildlife sightings to the authorities. On the road safety front, a recent fatal highway accident has highlighted the need for improved traffic management and infrastructure. Authorities are reviewing safety measures and considering upgrades to prevent such incidents in the future.
