Pune’s public transportation landscape is undergoing a significant transformation with the inauguration of two new electric bus depots at Charholi and Maan.
These developments are part of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd. (PMPML)’s ambitious plan to modernise and expand its fleet, aiming to provide a more sustainable and efficient transit system for the city’s residents. The Charholi depot, with a capacity to house 100 electric buses, and the Maan depot, accommodating 30, are integral components of PMPML’s strategy to enhance its electric bus infrastructure. These depots will serve as hubs for charging, maintenance, and operations of the growing fleet of electric buses. The initiative aligns with the state’s vision of promoting green mobility and reducing the carbon footprint of urban transportation.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, during the inauguration, announced that 1,500 new buses would be added to the PMPML fleet, comprising 1,000 electric buses and 500 CNG buses. This expansion is supported by financial contributions from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). The addition of these buses is expected to alleviate the growing commuter demand and enhance the efficiency of the public transport system. Currently, PMPML operates approximately 1,700 buses daily, including 490 electric buses, 175 diesel buses, and the remainder running on CNG. With the planned addition of 1,600 new buses, the fleet will significantly increase, further solidifying PMPML’s commitment to providing sustainable and reliable public transportation options. The expansion also includes the development of six mega charging stations at strategic locations such as Wagholi, Baner, Pune Railway Station, Bhosari, Moshi, and Charholi, to support the growing fleet of electric buses.
In addition to fleet expansion, PMPML is focusing on technological advancements to improve service delivery. The ‘Apli PMPML’ mobile app, which has already been downloaded by over 600,000 users, is set to launch on iOS platforms, enhancing accessibility for a broader user base. The app facilitates real-time tracking, route planning, and digital ticketing, contributing to a seamless commuting experience. The establishment of the Charholi and Maan depots marks a significant milestone in Pune’s journey towards a sustainable and efficient public transportation system. These developments not only cater to the immediate needs of the city’s commuters but also lay the foundation for a greener and more connected urban mobility future.
As Pune continues to expand its electric bus infrastructure and fleet, the collaboration between government agencies, municipal corporations, and PMPML underscores a collective commitment to enhancing public transport services. The focus on sustainability, efficiency, and technological integration positions Pune as a model for other cities striving to modernise their public transportation systems.
