In response to a recent fatal accident involving a dumper truck at Gangadham Chowk on Bibwewadi-Kondhwa Road, Pune’s traffic police have initiated a temporary ban on heavy vehicles from 7 am to 10 pm along two key routes leading to the chowk. This proactive measure aims to address safety concerns and alleviate traffic congestion in the area, known for its narrow roads and high vehicular density.
The decision follows an incident on June 12, where a 59-year-old woman lost her life and her daughter-in-law sustained injuries after being struck by a dumper truck. The ban specifically targets trucks, cement mixers, dumpers, and multi-axle commercial transport vehicles on routes originating from Shatrunjay temple and Tilekarnagar Chowk, converging at Aai Mata Mandir Road towards Gangadham Chowk.
Emergency and essential services such as fire brigade vehicles, police cars, PMPML buses, MSRTC buses, and vehicles transporting milk and LPG cylinders are exempted from the restriction to ensure uninterrupted public services.
A police official explained, “We have implemented this restriction on an experimental basis starting today, pending formal notification after gathering public feedback over the next month.” The ban aims to redirect heavy vehicle traffic from Katraj Chowk to the Katraj-Kondhwa Bypass, facilitating smoother movement towards Khadi Machine Chowk, Lullanagar, and Gangadham Chowk, including Gultekdi Market Yard as an alternate route.
Furthermore, authorities have invited suggestions and objections from the public regarding the ban, underscoring the collaborative approach to urban traffic management. Concerns over traffic snarls, particularly on Aai Mata Temple Road due to encroachments and residential zones flanking steep slopes, prompted the decision.
An assistant inspector highlighted, “The terrain’s steep gradient and frequent traffic congestion have made the area accident-prone. The ban aims to reduce accidents, breakdowns, and traffic jams exacerbated by heavy vehicle movements, especially during inclement weather conditions.”
Moving forward, strict enforcement measures under the Motor Vehicles Act will penalize violators, ensuring compliance and enhancing road safety standards. The temporary ban is part of ongoing efforts by Pune’s authorities to integrate safety protocols with urban development initiatives, promoting sustainable and secure transport infrastructure across the city.
