Pune cracks down on illegal hoardings after rains

The recent heavy rain in Maharashtra, Pune, concerns have mounted over the safety of illegally erected hoardings across the city and district.

NCP-SP Working President and Baramati MP Supriya Sule has called on local authorities to take immediate and strict action against these hazardous structures, highlighting the risks they pose during severe weather conditions. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Sule emphasised the dangers posed by numerous hoardings erected in unsafe and unlawful ways. “Many hoardings have been installed across Pune and surrounding areas without proper safety measures,” she noted. “There have been accidents caused by the collapse of these hoardings, resulting in loss of life and property.”

The MP urged the Pune district collector, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and the Pune municipal commissioner to enforce existing regulations rigorously. She stressed that urgent removal or reinforcement of unsafe and unauthorised hoardings is critical to prevent potential tragedies, especially given the ongoing heavy rains and strong winds. These warnings come after two major advertising hoardings recently collapsed in the Sanaswadi area on Pune-Ahmednagar Road, trapping several motorcycles beneath the debris. Another large hoarding also fell on Porwal Road in Dhanori. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in these incidents, but the close calls have heightened public concern.

The Pune administration now faces mounting pressure to ensure the safety of citizens by cracking down on illegal hoardings that compromise public safety during the monsoon season. With the rains expected to continue, this initiative represents an important step towards protecting lives and infrastructure from preventable hazards.
