Pune Commuters Demand Wider AC Bus Network

Pune: Following the successful launch of an air-conditioned feeder bus service from Ramwadi to Kharadi and Lohegaon airport, Metro commuters in Pune are now demanding similar services at other key stations, including Garware College, Vanaz, Nal Stop, and Shivajinagar. The new feeder service has garnered positive feedback, highlighting the growing need for enhanced last-mile connectivity.

Regular Metro users have emphasised the necessity for these feeder bus services to cover a 5km radius around the stations. A frequent commuter pointed out that areas such as Model Colony and University Road are not directly connected to the Metro network. “A minibus service should be initiated to cover these areas, benefiting commuters who wish to use the Metro,” the commuter suggested. The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited’s (PMPML) AC buses from Ramwadi to the airport and Kharadi have reported a healthy ridership, underscoring the demand for such services.

However, a similar service that was introduced at Garware College station has ceased operations. A resident from Lal Bahadur Shastri Road advocated for the introduction of AC buses from Garware College station to Dattawadi, as well as other key areas. Meanwhile, commuters at Nal Stop station have requested dedicated buses towards Warje, and Vanaz area residents are calling for a feeder bus service to cover Kothrud goathan and Chandni Chowk.

Officials from Maha Metro have indicated that surveys are underway to explore the feasibility of introducing feeder bus services at additional stations. “We are striving to improve last-mile connectivity. At some stations, PMPML has already established bus stops. Our teams will assess whether buses can be introduced in nearby areas as well,” a Maha Metro official stated. Furthermore, Maha Metro has approached the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and autorickshaw unions to initiate a share-an-auto service from Metro stations and to provide parking spaces at the maximum number of stations.

This push for expanded feeder services comes at a critical time as Pune continues to develop its Metro infrastructure. Improved last-mile connectivity is essential for maximising the Metro’s usage and providing commuters with a seamless transit experience. By addressing these demands, the authorities can significantly enhance the convenience and efficiency of public transport in the city, encouraging more residents to opt for sustainable modes of travel.
