The arteries of Pune’s urban transit are undergoing a temporary reconfiguration as the Bhide Bridge, a vital link across the Mutha River connecting the bustling Deccan Gymkhana area with the historic Shaniwar Peth, has been closed to all traffic – vehicular and pedestrian – until June 6th.

This one-and-a-half-month closure is necessitated to expedite the construction of a crucial foot overbridge that will seamlessly integrate the densely populated Peth areas with the burgeoning Pune Metro network. The Pune Metro Rail authorities confirmed the closure, stating that it is essential for the timely completion of the foot overbridge connecting Narayan Peth to the Deccan Gymkhana Metro station. As part of this strategic effort, two foot overbridges are currently under construction across the Mutha River. According to officials from the Pune Metro, significant progress has been made on the foot overbridge connecting Shaniwar Peth to the Bal Gandharva Metro Station, with expectations of it being opened to the public in the near future. The second foot overbridge, the construction of which necessitates the closure of the Bhide Bridge, will directly link Narayan Peth with the Deccan Gymkhana Metro station. This elevated pedestrian pathway is being constructed above the existing Bhide Bridge structure, a complex engineering feat anticipated to be completed within the next two months. The closure of the Bhide Bridge will inevitably impact the daily commutes of a significant number of Pune residents. While the riverside road adjacent to the bridge will remain open for vehicular traffic, the direct crossing afforded by the Bhide Bridge will be unavailable to both motorists and pedestrians for the specified duration. In light of this disruption, authorities have proactively advised citizens to utilise alternative routes to cross the Mutha River. These recommended detours include the Z-Bridge, the Lakdi Pul (Wood Bridge), and the Bal Gandharva Bridge, ensuring that connectivity between these key areas of the city is maintained, albeit through slightly longer routes.
