The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has provided an update on the city’s water supply, expressing cautious optimism despite inconsistent rainfall patterns. Officials from the PMC have noted that the four dams within the Khadakwasla circle currently hold a collective storage of 3.7 Thousand Million Cubic feet (TMC). This figure is crucial for determining the city’s water management strategy in the coming weeks.
PMC sources estimate that Pune’s civic areas will require approximately 1.5 TMC of water until July 15. Given the present dam storage, which includes a 0.5 TMC allocation for the upcoming Wari procession, officials believe there is adequate water to meet both domestic and agricultural demands without necessitating immediate water cuts. This assessment is, however, contingent on continued cautious water usage by residents and favourable weather conditions.
Recent rainfall in the Ujani dam catchment areas has significantly improved water levels, easing the pressure on Pune to source additional water supplies. While early June witnessed promising rainfall in Pune and its surrounding regions, there has been a temporary pause in showers since then. This variability underscores the importance of sustainable water usage to ensure the city can maintain its current supply levels.
Officials have issued a cautionary note, indicating that if the region experiences prolonged dry weather over the next two weeks, the PMC may need to reconsider implementing water cuts. This scenario would echo last year’s measures from May to July, which saw areas like Kharadi subjected to alternate-day water supply. The decision will be guided by continuous monitoring of weather patterns and consultations with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the irrigation department.
The PMC’s strategy remains focused on sustainable water management amid fluctuating weather conditions. The corporation is vigilant, closely tracking weather updates to make informed decisions about future water conservation measures. Prudent water usage by residents remains a critical component in maintaining stable water reserves and preventing potential shortages in the near term.
While Pune currently enjoys a relatively stable water reserve, ongoing rainfall and cautious consumption are essential to avert shortages. The PMC reassures residents of its commitment to ensuring an adequate water supply throughout the city. The decision regarding water cuts will be taken after thorough consultation with relevant meteorological and irrigation authorities, ensuring that all factors are considered before implementing any changes.
