Pune approves third and fourth railway lines boosting Lonavala connectivity
Pune’s much-awaited railway infrastructure expansion has finally been cleared, with the state government granting approval for the construction of the third and fourth lines on the busy Pune–Lonavala stretch. The project, to be jointly funded by the Centre and the State, marks a pivotal step towards easing commuter woes and modernising regional rail transport. The decision, long demanded by citizens and industry, is being hailed as a transformative development for one of Maharashtra’s most crucial suburban corridors.
Currently, the Pune–Lonavala route operates on two overburdened tracks that handle both passenger and freight traffic. Congestion has been a persistent challenge, with express trains often delayed and suburban services overstretched during peak hours. Officials confirmed that the additional lines will allow segregation of suburban and long-distance trains, enabling faster express services and more frequent local trains. This separation of operations is expected to significantly improve punctuality and efficiency.
Experts believe the expansion will also catalyse broader socio-economic benefits. Pune, a hub for education, IT, manufacturing and services, attracts thousands of daily commuters, students, and workers from surrounding towns. With enhanced capacity, suburban travel will become more reliable, encouraging people to shift from road to rail. This transition not only reduces traffic congestion on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway but also lowers vehicular emissions, aligning with India’s goals of promoting eco-friendly and sustainable urban transport.Transport planners highlight that the project is integral to the Indian Railways’ broader modernisation agenda. Many emphasise that delay in execution could dampen the positive impact of the approval.
