Pune And Nagpur Metro Receive Rs 100 Crore State Funding For Construction

The Maharashtra government has sanctioned Rs 100 crore in fresh equity to support ongoing metro rail projects in Pune and Nagpur, signalling continued commitment to modernising urban mobility in the state. The allocation, formalised via a government order on 24 December, is intended to sustain construction momentum and ensure timely progress across both city networks.

In Pune, the fully underground Swargate-Katraj corridor (Corridor 2A) received Rs 40 crore as part of its equity contribution. This 6.5-kilometre stretch, with a total project cost of Rs 2,954.75 crore, has Maharashtra’s equity share pegged at Rs 397.83 crore. The recent disbursement brings cumulative state contributions for 2025 to Rs 100 crore, a step officials say will support consistent work and project delivery. Nagpur Metro Stage-2 also received Rs 60 crore in state equity, contributing towards the government’s total commitment of Rs 998.20 crore. Cumulative state disbursements for Nagpur now reach Rs 577 crore. According to a senior urban development official, the allocation is expected to maintain construction schedules, prevent delays, and ensure integration with broader urban transport planning.

Industry experts highlight that sustained equity funding is crucial for metro projects, which often face cash flow challenges during multi-year construction phases. “Stable government financing allows metro corporations to manage costs, maintain timelines, and avoid project slowdowns that impact citizens’ mobility,” an infrastructure analyst said. Both projects are integral to improving urban connectivity, reducing travel times, and offering environmentally sustainable alternatives to road transport. Pune’s underground corridor in particular is expected to ease congestion along one of the city’s busiest transit arteries, while Nagpur’s Stage-2 expansion will extend coverage to emerging urban hubs. Officials stress that these investments are part of a larger vision for inclusive, low-carbon urban mobility, consistent with Maharashtra’s commitment to sustainable city planning.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro) oversees implementation of both networks, coordinating between state authorities, contractors, and local urban agencies. Government sources note that these fresh allocations also prepare the projects to integrate future technology solutions, including AI-enabled operations, automated signalling, and smart station management systems, which will improve passenger comfort, accessibility, and safety. As both cities continue to expand their metro networks, these funding decisions highlight the importance of sustained state equity in enabling India’s urban transport transformation. For Pune and Nagpur residents, timely completion of metro corridors promises faster, greener, and more reliable public transport options, supporting wider economic growth and sustainable urban development.
