Pune Airport To Expand Facilities With IAF Land By October

Pune airport is set for a significant infrastructure boost with the planned handover of 13 acres of land from the Indian Air Force (IAF) to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) by October. Officials confirmed that this expansion will support the development of new parking bays and remote stands, alongside modernised passenger facilities, in time for the winter flight schedule starting October 26.

The land transfer is part of a coordinated plan between AAI, IAF, and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to streamline airport operations while improving commuter experience. The 13-acre plot will accommodate five new parking bays and three remote bays, enabling aircraft to land and depart without delays, particularly during peak morning hours from 6 am to 10:30 am. This expansion also increases available slots from 212 to 235, offering airlines greater flexibility in scheduling during the winter schedule.

Airport officials emphasised that some of the new parking bays are expected to be operational by December or January 2026, coinciding with peak festive season travel. The addition of parking and remote bays is projected to enhance operational efficiency, reduce turnaround time, and improve on-time departures, directly benefiting passengers and airlines alike.

In parallel, AAI is converting the arrival area of the old terminal building into a modern departure zone with upgraded security checks. The revamped departure area, slated for completion by December, will offer travellers a smoother experience, complementing the existing terminal that has already served over 1 crore passengers since opening in July 2024. Experts note that these measures are in line with best practices for sustainable airport management, integrating operational efficiency with passenger comfort. The expansion also extends to the airport’s surrounding infrastructure. Officials from Pune airport, IAF, and PMC, along with representatives from the Ministry of Defence, recently held a joint meeting to approve the widening and beautification of access roads leading to the airport. This initiative is expected to improve vehicular flow, enhance aesthetic appeal, and facilitate safe, sustainable access to the airport.

Transport and aviation experts highlighted that timely completion of these projects is crucial for accommodating the projected rise in passenger traffic during the winter schedule. Improved facilities, increased slots, and enhanced road connectivity collectively support a safer, more efficient, and eco-conscious airport ecosystem. With strategic planning and coordination among agencies, Pune airport’s expansion exemplifies an integrated approach to urban aviation infrastructure. The developments promise a seamless travel experience for passengers, reduced congestion, and operational readiness in line with India’s broader vision of sustainable, modern airports.
