Pune Airport Old Terminal Upgrade to Boost Capacity

Pune International Airport is undergoing significant infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the growing passenger demand.

The redevelopment of the old terminal is a crucial component of this expansion, aiming to enhance passenger experience and increase capacity. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has initiated the redevelopment project, which includes converting the existing arrival hall into an extended departure hall. This area will be connected to the new integrated terminal building (NITB) via a corridor, optimizing operational efficiency. The revamped terminal will feature 48 check-in counters, an increase from the current 34, to streamline passenger processing. Additionally, two automated boarding gates and a new departure gate will be added to facilitate smoother boarding procedures. The ticketing area will also be expanded to accommodate the increased passenger volume.

The total area of the terminal will be expanded by 6,000 square meters, with the central government allocating ₹25 crore to support this redevelopment effort. The project is expected to be completed by August 2025, ensuring that the airport can handle up to 1.05 crore passengers annually. This expansion comes in response to the increasing air traffic, with Pune airport recording a 10.66% rise in passenger movements in FY 2024-25, reaching 1.05 crore travelers compared to 95.2 lakh in the previous year. The new terminal, operational since March 2025, has been instrumental in managing this surge, featuring modern amenities and energy-efficient technologies.

The redevelopment of the old terminal is part of a broader plan to enhance the airport’s infrastructure. The completion of the Obstacle Limitation Survey (OLS) for the runway extension is a significant milestone in this regard. The extension will allow the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and more international flights in the future. The runway extension project involves increasing the runway length by approximately 650 meters to the east and 350 meters to the west. This expansion requires extensive land acquisition and coordination with the Indian Air Force. The land acquisition process is expected to be completed within six months, with the runway extension slated for completion by 2027.

These developments underscore Pune’s commitment to enhancing its aviation infrastructure to meet the growing demands of air travel. The upgrades to the old terminal and the runway extension are expected to position Pune International Airport as a key hub in the region, facilitating improved connectivity and contributing to economic growth.
