Pune Airport Metro Link Moves Toward Planning Stage

Pune’s effort to connect its international airport to the city’s expanding rapid transit network has entered a new planning phase, with authorities identifying a feasible alignment for a future metro corridor that would provide direct rail access to the aviation hub. The move signals a shift in the city’s mobility strategy as officials attempt to reduce road congestion and strengthen sustainable transport links between key employment districts and transport gateways. 

The proposed Pune airport metro link will form part of a longer metro corridor expected to stretch between Khadakwasla in the western part of the city and the technology hub of Hinjewadi. Officials involved in the planning process say a detailed project report will now be prepared after evaluating several route options and identifying the most technically viable alignment. At present, the airport in Lohegaon remains accessible primarily through road networks, a limitation that often results in severe traffic congestion, particularly along the busy Nagar Road corridor. Although a metro line already runs through parts of this eastern stretch, the nearest operational station still requires travellers to complete the final distance by road transport.

Urban mobility experts say a dedicated rail connection could transform access patterns for both passengers and airport workers. Direct metro access would reduce travel uncertainty during peak hours while potentially lowering vehicle volumes on surrounding arterial roads. The Pune airport metro link is also expected to improve integration across the city’s broader transport system. By connecting residential neighbourhoods in western Pune, the IT employment cluster in Hinjewadi and the airport gateway, the corridor could create a continuous rapid transit spine linking multiple economic zones. Transport planners say this approach reflects a growing emphasis on multimodal mobility within Indian metropolitan regions. Airport rail connectivity is increasingly viewed as a crucial element in urban transport planning because it reduces reliance on private vehicles and supports climate-friendly travel patterns.

Some commuter groups have proposed alternative metro alignments that would pass through southern Pune before reaching Hinjewadi, arguing such a route could ease traffic pressure on the heavily used Mumbai–Bengaluru highway corridor. That stretch carries both intercity traffic and large volumes of daily IT commuters, making it one of the most congested road segments in the metropolitan region. Alongside the airport link proposal, other metro projects are progressing across the city. One major corridor connecting Shivajinagar and Hinjewadi serving Pune’s largest technology district is approaching completion, with several stations expected to become operational in the coming months. Additional metro expansions linking emerging residential zones in the eastern and western suburbs are also moving through planning and construction stages. Together, these corridors aim to expand the city’s rail-based mobility network at a time when Pune’s population and employment base continue to grow rapidly .

Urban planners note that the success of the Pune airport metro link will depend not only on construction but also on integration with buses, pedestrian infrastructure and last-mile transport. Without such coordination, the benefits of rapid transit systems can remain underutilised. As planning moves forward, the proposed corridor represents another step toward building a transport system capable of supporting Pune’s growth while reducing the environmental footprint of daily commuting.
