Pune Airport Expansion Plans Await Land Clearance

Pune’s aviation infrastructure could see a significant transformation as authorities prepare plans to expand the city’s primary airport at Lohegaon, contingent on securing additional land from the Maharashtra government. The proposed Pune airport expansion aims to strengthen passenger services, cargo logistics and air connectivity, reflecting the city’s growing role as a major technology and manufacturing hub in western India.

Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) indicated that approximately 300 acres of land have been requested from the state government to facilitate the next phase of infrastructure upgrades. Discussions between the airport operator and state authorities are ongoing, with the project expected to move forward once land availability is confirmed. The proposed Pune airport expansion comes at a time when the city’s passenger traffic and cargo volumes are steadily rising. Urban planners note that improved aviation capacity will be essential for Pune’s expanding economic base, which includes information technology, automotive manufacturing and high-value exports that depend on efficient air freight networks.

Among the priorities being examined are upgrades to cargo handling systems and logistics infrastructure. Aviation officials suggest that policy reforms and streamlined processing frameworks introduced by the central government are helping reduce bottlenecks in cargo clearance. Faster processing times and improved infrastructure could position Pune as a stronger node within India’s emerging multimodal logistics ecosystem.
Another aspect under consideration is potential runway augmentation. Experts say that runway expansion, if supported by adequate land availability, could enable the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and support additional international routes. Enhanced runway capacity is often critical for cities seeking to strengthen global trade links and attract business travel.

In parallel, authorities are working on passenger mobility improvements at the airport. One initiative under discussion involves a new taxi aggregation system designed to streamline last-mile connectivity while ensuring transparent fares and improved driver participation. Officials say the service will also include options aimed at improving travel safety, including the ability for women passengers to request women drivers.
Urban mobility experts observe that such measures are increasingly important as Indian airports handle growing passenger volumes while attempting to improve traveller experience and safety standards. Integrating reliable ground transport with aviation infrastructure can significantly reduce congestion and improve overall journey efficiency.

However, industry observers emphasise that timelines for the airport’s next development phase remain uncertain. Land acquisition and intergovernmental coordination often determine how quickly infrastructure projects progress. If implemented, the Pune airport expansion could play a pivotal role in supporting the city’s long-term growth trajectory. Strengthening air cargo capabilities, improving passenger facilities and expanding runway capacity would not only support economic activity but also help Pune adapt to the demands of a rapidly urbanising and globally connected region.
