Pune Airport Expansion Plan Approves 300 Acres Runway Extension And MRO Facility

Pune Airport is poised for a significant upgrade, with the Maharashtra government submitting a comprehensive expansion proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation. The plan envisages acquiring over 300 acres for runway extension and development of aviation infrastructure, including a dedicated aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility. Officials say the project aims to enhance both commercial and private flight operations while positioning Pune as a regional aviation hub.

The proposal is also scheduled for review by the Ministry of Defence, as the airport operates under Indian Air Force oversight. Only after clearance from the MoD will land acquisition commence. The targeted plots comprise a mix of government and privately held lands surrounding the current airfield, highlighting the need for careful coordination and stakeholder engagement. Key features of the expansion include lengthening the existing runway, increasing aircraft parking bays, and creating a separate terminal for private aircraft and helicopters. The planned MRO facility will enable aircraft servicing locally, reducing dependence on other cities for maintenance work and potentially attracting aviation businesses to Pune. “The project aligns with sustainable aviation development and supports operational efficiency for general aviation,” a senior official noted.

The demand for a general aviation terminal has grown with the increasing use of private helicopters and chartered flights in Pune. Officials emphasised that segregating private operations from commercial traffic will streamline airport functioning and improve passenger experience. Once completed, the extended runway will accommodate larger aircraft, facilitating higher passenger and cargo capacity. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation confirmed the submission, noting that the expansion will cover over 300 acres and include an MRO unit. Analysts observe that such infrastructure investments could bolster Pune’s position as a competitive aviation hub, creating jobs, boosting local businesses, and supporting sustainable regional connectivity.

Urban planners and aviation experts stress that integrating modern facilities with careful environmental management is crucial. Proper land acquisition, eco-sensitive design, and noise management will ensure minimal impact on nearby communities while supporting Pune’s broader urban development goals. The airport expansion marks a decisive step in modernising Pune’s aviation infrastructure, potentially transforming it into a state-of-the-art hub that balances commercial growth, private travel, and environmental sustainability. Authorities are preparing detailed project reports and stakeholder consultations before the final approvals, signalling a forward-looking approach to urban air mobility.
