The Pune airport witnessed a surprisingly smooth flow of travellers this Diwali, a significant achievement given the typical congestion during the festive season. Ashutosh Sharma, a traveller to Delhi, noted an efficient experience despite heavy footfall. He arrived over four hours in advance, bracing for prolonged security lines, only to clear them in under five minutes—a testament to the airport’s refined preparations. Historically, Pune’s airport is known for bottlenecks at security checks, particularly during festivals when passenger numbers soar. This year, however, careful planning and strategic resource deployment brought relief to thousands of passengers.
Aiming for a high standard in passenger service, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Pune airport set a nine-minute target for processing queues at security check areas. Remarkably, they achieved this goal across the festive period, with most travellers reporting an even quicker clearance. Pune Airport Director highlighted several factors contributing to this success. The newly operational inline baggage screening systems, located within the new terminal, significantly enhanced baggage handling speeds. In addition, real-time passenger data from airlines allowed airport management to dynamically allocate personnel, adjusting staffing during peak and off-peak hours to maintain smooth flow.
In an effort to further minimise congestion, the airport employed several adaptive strategies. Airline staff were strategically stationed throughout the airport to assist passengers, and additional departure gates were opened when foot traffic surged. The availability of five X-ray machines in the older terminal, along with ten in the newer terminal, ensured an optimal screening rate. Prior to Diwali, the airport opened a new lounge in the new building and activated all food and beverage outlets, which enhanced traveller comfort and reduced crowding.
Some travellers, however, reported minor challenges arising from the dual-terminal arrangement. Dhanori resident and frequent flyer Ramesh Nair, en route to Goa, experienced confusion as flights operated out of both terminals, leading to some navigation challenges. The absence of DigiYatra facilities in the new building caused delays at departure gates, as passengers sought clarification on gate locations. Nonetheless, compared to previous experiences, security checks were smoother this year, with notable improvements in overall management.
Going forward, concerns remain as Pune airport prepares to shift all flight operations to the new terminal. Business traveller Ravi Shetty believes the real test will come then, as passenger loads will no longer be divided across terminals. Yet, the promising efficiency displayed this Diwali offers a glimpse into how Pune airport can handle future challenges with the right combination of technology, planning, and flexible resource management. As airports increasingly focus on operational sustainability, Pune’s approach offers a valuable model for balancing high service standards with passenger-friendly facilities.
