Pune Airport carried out an extensive fog management mock drill and table-top exercise on 13 December 2025, aiming to bolster operational preparedness for low-visibility conditions during the winter season. This initiative underscores the airport’s commitment to seamless, safe, and passenger-centric operations amid increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. The exercise brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including airlines, the Indian Air Force, Central Industrial Security Force, local police, ground handling agencies, ride-hailing services, and terminal concessionaires.
The coordinated effort focused on optimising flight operations during fog, improving passenger communication, managing delays, diversions, and cancellations, and ensuring continuity of essential terminal services.
Key areas addressed included timely dissemination of flight and weather updates, deployment of additional manpower, assistance for persons with reduced mobility, availability of food and seating arrangements, and adherence to DGCA-prescribed passenger care norms. Real-time coordination between operational units, security personnel, and service providers was emphasised to maintain safety and efficiency throughout the airport.
An airport official highlighted the importance of proactive stakeholder engagement: “Fog and low-visibility events can disrupt schedules and passenger experience significantly. By rehearsing real-time scenarios with all partners, we ensure both operational resilience and passenger satisfaction.” Traffic management around the terminal, fare regulation for nearby transport services, and crowd control were also key components of the exercise, reflecting a holistic approach to airport management. Industry experts note that such drills are critical not only for safety but also for sustainability. By improving operational efficiency during adverse weather, airports reduce unnecessary fuel consumption from holding patterns, diversions, and delayed departures, contributing to a lower carbon footprint. Additionally, structured drills help in equitable passenger treatment, avoiding disproportionate inconvenience to vulnerable groups.
