Pune Accelerates Construction On 4.413 Km Metro Extension From PCMC

The Pune Metro authorities are significantly accelerating construction on the extended segment of Phase One, stretching 4.413 kilometres from PCMC station to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi. This intensified effort underscores the city’s commitment to expanding its green mobility infrastructure, promising to alleviate traffic congestion and foster a more sustainable urban environment. The project is a vital step in enhancing connectivity and improving the daily commute for thousands of citizens, aligning with Pune’s vision for eco-friendly and equitable development.

Despite the foundation stone being laid in March last year, actual construction on this crucial elevated extension commenced five months later in August. However, Pune Metro officials are now targeting a remarkable 30-month completion timeline, six months ahead of the initially planned 36-month duration. Work is progressing rapidly, with civil construction in full swing, and administrative procedures for installing overhead cables, escalators, and lifts have already begun. This proactive approach aims to circumvent potential delays later in the project cycle, ensuring swift delivery of this vital public transport artery.

The PCMC-Nigdi extension will feature three new stations: Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi. The project is estimated to cost ₹1,048.22 crore, a comprehensive budget that includes provisions for seamless intermodal integration, modern station development, pedestrian bridges, tracks, environmental impact assessments, design, depots, and essential parking facilities. This holistic planning ensures that the new metro line will not only provide efficient transport but also integrate smoothly into the existing urban fabric, enhancing overall accessibility for commuters.

Beyond this immediate extension, Pune’s metro network is undergoing a broader transformation. The currently operational 17.4-kilometre route from Swargate to PCMC has garnered strong public support. Plans are also in motion for a 5.5-kilometre underground extension from Swargate to Katraj in the south, estimated at ₹2,954.53 crore, with a targeted completion by February 2029, though construction is yet to commence. Additionally, the fully functional 15.7-kilometre Vanaz-Ramwadi route recently received Central Government approval for extensions to Chandani Chowk and Wagholi, adding 12.75 kilometres and 13 new stations at a cost of ₹3,636.24 crore, expected to be completed in four years.

Separately, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is actively developing Metro Line-3, a 23-kilometre corridor connecting Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar District Court, scheduled to become operational by March 2026. These extensive metro projects collectively signify a monumental shift towards sustainable urban mobility. By providing efficient, high-capacity public transport, they are poised to significantly reduce vehicular emissions, alleviate traffic congestion, and enhance air quality, directly contributing to Pune’s zero-net-carbon goals and fostering a more liveable, gender-neutral, and equitable city for all its inhabitants.
