Heavy rainfall battered Prayagraj on Thursday, bringing the city to a standstill for hours. A relentless six-hour downpour submerged major neighbourhoods and roads under knee-deep water, paralyzing civic life. Disruptions spread across transport, electricity, education, and connectivity, with key institutions like Allahabad University facing outages and access issues. Residents, students, and daily commuters were stranded across flooded streets, highlighting the fragile urban infrastructure and insufficient drainage systems. Although the rains cooled the temperature and offered brief weather relief, their aftermath exposed deep governance gaps and the growing threat of monsoon-linked urban disasters.
Roads across Allahapur, George Town, Old Katra, and Attarsuiya became rivers, leaving vehicles stranded and posing serious risks to pedestrians and bikers. With 42mm of rainfall recorded in just six hours, the city witnessed a breakdown of civic preparedness. Residents reported sewer overflows, broken pavements, and a sharp dip in mobility, especially for schoolchildren and the elderly. Several school premises were inundated, forcing many students to remain indoors post-hours until water levels reduced. While morning hours passed uneventfully, the scene shifted drastically by midday as waterlogged roads choked the city’s functioning. Electricity was disrupted across multiple neighbourhoods due to fallen trees and power line failures. At Allahabad University, the campus remained without electricity for hours despite having a dedicated 133 KVA line. Areas dependent on electric pumps faced water supply breakdowns, compounding public inconvenience.
Telecom services, already strained under weather conditions, deteriorated further with patchy mobile networks reported across multiple zones. Experts noted that gusts exceeding 30 knots worsened the situation, leading to uprooted trees and infrastructure strain. The civic response, as per residents, remained delayed, forcing many to navigate floodwaters on their own. Experts at the India Meteorological Department attributed the persistent rainfall to a low-pressure depression over the region. Although the rain eased by 1 pm, dark clouds loomed well into the evening. Officials indicated that heavy to very heavy rainfall could continue over the next 24 hours across Prayagraj and adjoining districts. Despite temporary weather relief through cooler temperatures and breezy conditions, the event pointed to the urgency for robust flood management systems in urban India. While Prayagraj has witnessed heavy monsoons before, the recurrence of such flood events in recent years underscores the need for stronger civic planning and climate-adaptive infrastructure.
Prayagraj’s ordeal once again raises questions about sustainable urban resilience.
