As Prayagraj readies itself to host the Mahakumbh 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government is fast-tracking major infrastructure projects to accommodate the anticipated influx of nearly 40 crore pilgrims. Under Chief Minister leadership, the city is undergoing extensive road widening and beautification efforts, with all projects set for completion by November 30, 2024.
The roads leading to the Sangam—the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati—are being significantly upgraded. Key routes such as Triveni Road, Lal Sadak, Kali Sadak, and Naval Rai Road are being expanded to handle double the traffic volume of the previous Kumbh, which saw 25 crore visitors. These improvements aim to ensure smoother traffic flow, providing better access for pilgrims during the mega event.
Vivek Chaturvedi, the Additional Mela Officer, stated that the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) and the Cantonment Board have worked collaboratively to complete these vital projects. Besides the road expansions, interlocking footpaths are being installed for pedestrian safety. The upgraded roads will not only improve traffic management but will also enhance the city’s aesthetics, adding decorative elements that contribute to the spiritual ambiance. Additionally, the government is focusing on improving navigation for visitors. Information centres will be set up across key points in the city, with signboards and hoardings guiding pilgrims to religious and tourist sites. The city’s development plan also emphasizes sustainability, with durable, eco-friendly materials being used to reduce traffic congestion and create long-lasting urban infrastructure. As the event draws near, residents and devotees alike are eager for the transformed Prayagraj, where improved infrastructure promises a safer, smoother, and more enriching Mahakumbh experience.
