Prayagraj Launches State First Cattle Polyclinic Facility

Prayagraj has established its first advanced veterinary polyclinic dedicated to cattle. Located in Kanti village, approximately 30 km from the city’s core, the ₹9 crore facility marks a significant milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s public veterinary services. Officials confirmed that the clinic is expected to be fully operational by August, symbolising the state’s renewed commitment to sustainable livestock management.

The polyclinic is designed to deliver 24×7 specialised care to both domestic and stray cattle. Equipped with modern diagnostics such as x-ray, ultrasound, and pathology testing, as well as a dedicated operation theatre, the facility will be manned by postgraduate-qualified veterinary experts. Authorities noted that the centre aims to ease the strain on existing rural units and respond more efficiently to both emergency and routine animal health requirements. Experts from the district’s animal husbandry department stated that this initiative is aligned with a broader strategy of decentralising veterinary services, particularly in areas with high livestock density. The facility is not only a medical hub but also a step toward reducing the ecological burden caused by untreated cattle ailments and abandoned livestock on urban environments.

Animal health officials pointed to rising demand for field-level veterinary care due to increasing awareness among cattle owners and farmers. To address this, 13 mobile veterinary units have been deployed throughout the district, offering doorstep care and emergency services in hard-to-reach areas. A toll-free helpline (1962) has also been made available for round-the-clock animal health assistance, further bridging accessibility gaps. In tandem, the district now hosts 97 cow service centres or Gau Sewa Kendras, which have been instrumental in delivering immunisation against diseases such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis—conditions that pose both economic and public health threats.

City planners and sustainability advocates have welcomed the project as a progressive step toward achieving equitable, eco-conscious urban development. Beyond medical benefits, the polyclinic is expected to enhance rural livelihoods and bolster the regional dairy economy, all while reducing the unregulated urban presence of stray cattle. While the polyclinic alone won’t resolve all animal welfare issues in the city, it represents a firm shift toward institutionalised veterinary infrastructure. With planned integration into wider urban sustainability schemes, Prayagraj’s investment in cattle care could serve as a blueprint for similar cities facing livestock and ecological pressures.
