Power Outage Hits 1.42 Lakh Consumers in Pune Hinjawadi Region

A minor fault in the 220 KV Pirangut-Kandalgaon high-voltage tower line caused a significant disruption in electricity supply across several parts of Pune on Monday. The outage, which began at 11:50 AM, lasted for 35 minutes, but affected an estimated 1.42 lakh consumers, primarily in the Hinjawadi region. The fault disrupted power supply to 14 sub-stations of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), leaving a large section of the population without electricity during peak working hours.

The impact was particularly severe in areas such as Mulshi, Bhugaon, Bhukum, Pirangut, Paud, Male, Mutha Valley, Marunji, Jambhe, and Nere, which are served by MSEDCL’s Mulshi sub-station and 13 other sub-stations. Around 97,000 residents in these areas were left without power. Additionally, approximately 45,000 consumers in Hinjawadi, including 200 high-voltage customers, experienced similar disruptions, affecting both domestic and commercial electricity supply. Such outages not only cause inconvenience but also lead to productivity losses for businesses reliant on a steady power supply, further impacting the local economy.

MahaTransco, the state-run utility responsible for maintaining power infrastructure, responded swiftly to the issue. By deploying emergency teams, they managed to restore the ultra-high voltage power line, ensuring that normal electricity supply was reinstated by 12:25 PM. Despite the quick response, the event highlighted vulnerabilities in the power distribution network and raised concerns about the resilience of urban infrastructure in handling such disruptions. As Pune continues to expand, the need for robust power systems capable of meeting growing demand is becoming more apparent.

From a sustainability perspective, this outage underscores the challenges that cities face as they scale up. Power outages, while often brief, can have a long-term impact on the local environment.
