Power Infrastructure Expansion Underway In Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is undertaking a significant expansion of its power infrastructure to meet rising electricity demand, with the state government allocating ₹6,000 crore for new substations. The announcement, made in the Legislative Assembly, outlined plans for over 200 high-capacity 33/11 kV substations, targeting regions experiencing heavy load growth.

Officials noted that the expansion is crucial to improving grid reliability and supporting industrial and urban development across the state. The Venugopalapuram substation in Vizianagaram district has been highlighted as a priority project, with completion scheduled for March 2027. Authorities are coordinating land acquisition, construction, and equipment procurement to ensure timely delivery.Urban planners and energy experts emphasise that strengthening the substation network will support both urban and rural electrification, reduce outages, and facilitate integration of renewable energy sources. In high-demand zones, these upgrades are expected to improve power quality, enabling smoother industrial operations and more reliable supply for households.

The investment also reflects a broader strategy to modernise the state’s power distribution network, incorporating advanced control systems and energy-efficient technologies. By expanding substation capacity, Andhra Pradesh aims to address bottlenecks in transmission, enhance load management, and support smart-grid initiatives aligned with climate resilience goals.Economic analysts note that reliable power infrastructure is a key enabler for investment in manufacturing, IT, and technology sectors, particularly in districts experiencing rapid urbanisation. The projects also present opportunities for local employment during construction and maintenance phases, contributing to inclusive economic growth. While the financial allocation is substantial, successful execution will require careful planning to minimise environmental impacts and community disruptions. Stakeholders recommend ongoing monitoring of project progress and engagement with local communities to ensure that development aligns with sustainable and equitable urban growth objectives.
