PMRDA Proposes ₹67 Crore Plan to Boost Tourism and Infrastructure in Pune Metropolitan Region
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is making strides to improve the region’s tourism infrastructure with a significant ₹67 crore proposal aimed at enhancing connectivity and facilities for key tourist spots. This proposal, which includes road development, sanitation, parking facilities, and increased security, is expected to make these popular destinations more accessible and appealing to both tourists and locals.
The projects will focus on nine key tourist locations spread across Maval, Haveli, and Mulshi talukas. Among these, Maval taluka will benefit the most, with five major sites such as the Khadakwasla and Pawana dams, along with Tikona, Tung, Lohagad, and Rajmachi forts being prioritised for development. These destinations are known for their scenic beauty and historical significance, and improving their infrastructure could boost tourism in the region significantly. Dr Yogesh Mhase, PMRDA commissioner, elaborated on the aim of the projects, stating, “This initiative seeks to provide better infrastructure for tourists, ensuring safer and more convenient access to popular destinations in the Pune Metropolitan Region. The plan has been approved by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at a meeting in Mumbai this week.”
The proposed ₹67 crore projects will focus on improving several areas essential for tourism, including the development of roads, parking spaces, and sanitation facilities. One of the key developments is the creation of a proper chowpatty at Khadakwasla dam, an area that has gained popularity but lacks essential infrastructure like parking, toilets, and proper safety measures. A sum of ₹1 crore has been allocated for the installation of a chainlink fence along the dam, which will enhance safety and organisation, allowing for more streamlined tourist visits. Further improvements will be made to the Palshe waterfall in Mulshi taluka, which will receive protective nets, improved roads, guardrails, and landslide protection for ₹2 crore. The Mulshi lake area will also be beautified, with enhanced parking and meeting spaces, again with a budget of ₹2 crore. Additionally, a 2.10 km road, worth ₹3 crore, will be constructed at Sri Sathya Sai Pandurang Kshetra in Hadshi, Mulshi, improving accessibility to this spiritual site.
In addition to these initiatives, a substantial ₹38 crore has been allocated to improve connectivity to key forts in the region, which are major attractions for tourists. The PMRDA plans to develop a 14 km road connecting Mugao and Tamhini Ghat in Maval, costing ₹10 crore. Similarly, roads leading to the historic Tikona and Pawana forts will be expanded with a ₹8 crore investment, and a ₹7 crore road will be constructed to improve access to Lohagad fort. The most ambitious project, however, is the 14 km road to Rajmachi fort, with an investment of ₹17 crore. These projects are set to significantly ease access to the forts, which are scattered across the scenic hills of Maval. In a move to ensure the sustainable growth of these tourist sites, the PMRDA has also formed a special committee aimed at curbing illegal construction in the region. The committee will consist of local officials, including Sarpanch, Talathi, Gram Sevak, and Police Patil, who will work together to raise awareness about obtaining proper construction permits. Over 9,000 unauthorised constructions have been identified in the area, many of which pose safety risks and lead to fraud.
With this new initiative, the PMRDA hopes to ensure that development in these tourist hotspots remains legal and safe. The ₹67 crore infrastructure proposal by the PMRDA represents a significant step towards boosting tourism in the Pune Metropolitan Region. With the focus on improving road connectivity, facilities, and security measures at key tourist destinations, these projects aim to create a more enjoyable and sustainable tourism experience. Moreover, the initiative to curb illegal construction ensures that the development remains responsible and well-regulated, fostering long-term growth in the region. As the plans move forward, the people of Pune and visitors alike are sure to benefit from enhanced infrastructure, making the city and its surrounding areas an even more attractive destination for tourism.
