PMRDA Plans 50 Km Concrete Road Parallel to Metro Line 3 in Pune

The persistent woes of commuters navigating the challenging thoroughfares near Metro Line 3 are finally being addressed with a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has initiated plans to construct a robust 50-kilometre cement-concrete road, paralleling the 25-kilometre elevated metro corridor that links Maan in Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. This dual-carriageway design, effectively creating a 25-kilometre stretch in each direction, is poised to revolutionise the daily commute for thousands, offering a smoother, safer, and more efficient travel experience.

The integrated development approach underscores a commitment to sustainable urban planning. By aligning road infrastructure with the metro network, PMRDA aims to foster a multimodal transportation ecosystem that encourages public transit ridership while optimising road usage. This strategic synergy is crucial for Pune, a rapidly expanding city grappling with increasing vehicular density and its environmental repercussions. The use of cement-concrete, known for its durability and lower maintenance needs, aligns with long-term sustainability goals, reducing the frequency of road repairs and associated carbon footprints.

Umesh Mallawat, Executive Engineer at PMRDA, confirmed that tenders have been floated to engage expert consultants. These specialists will be entrusted with the meticulous preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the efficient management of bids, the innovative design of the road layout, and the diligent supervision of the entire construction process. This comprehensive oversight ensures that the project adheres to the highest standards of engineering and urban design, fostering a resilient and adaptable urban infrastructure.

Beyond the core road construction, the project’s scope extends to embrace crucial elements of urban greening and public utility enhancements. Plans include the strategic placement of medians complemented by extensive beautification initiatives, the upgrade of electrification networks, and the meticulous shifting of existing utilities to facilitate seamless development. Crucially, the design incorporates dedicated bus bays, well-defined parking lanes, and significant pedestrian infrastructure upgrades, all contributing to a more accessible and inclusive urban environment. These additions are vital for promoting walkability and enhancing public transport integration, essential components of a truly equitable and sustainable city.

Before the main construction phase commences, the current contractor responsible for Metro Line 3 will undertake interim repairs to ensure the existing roads are motorable and safe. This immediate relief measure will be followed by the full-fledged development, guided by the consultant’s approved design and project blueprint. A stringent four-month timeline has been established for the finalisation of critical surveys, design parameters, and tender documents, signalling PMRDA’s intent to expedite this much-needed upgrade. The project, with its focus on enhancing last-mile connectivity and easing traffic bottlenecks, is expected to significantly elevate the overall commuting experience for Pune’s residents, setting a precedent for integrated urban development.
