PMRDA and MIDC Address Drainage Issues in Hinjawadi

As Pune braces for the monsoon season, Hinjawadi, the city’s prominent IT hub, is under scrutiny for its preparedness to handle the impending rains. On June 16, 2025, officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) conducted a joint inspection of the area’s drainage systems, road conditions, and overall civic infrastructure.

The review focused on Hinjawadi Phases 1, 2, and 3, areas that have historically struggled with waterlogging and traffic congestion during the monsoon months. Despite ongoing metro construction and rapid urbanisation, residents and IT professionals have raised concerns over inadequate drainage systems and deteriorating road conditions. “The roads are riddled with potholes, and the drainage systems are often blocked, leading to severe waterlogging,” said a local resident. In response to these issues, PMRDA Commissioner Deepak Singla and MIDC Joint CEO Vijay Rathod led the inspection to assess the situation firsthand. The officials observed the current state of the drainage infrastructure and discussed potential solutions to mitigate the impact of the monsoon. “We are committed to ensuring that the necessary measures are taken to address these concerns and improve the infrastructure in Hinjawadi,” stated Singla.

However, despite these efforts, the effectiveness of the proposed solutions remains uncertain. Residents have expressed scepticism about the timely implementation of the planned improvements. “Past promises have not been fulfilled, and we are concerned that this time will be no different,” remarked an IT employee working in the area. The review also highlighted the need for better coordination between various agencies involved in urban planning and infrastructure development. Officials emphasised the importance of a unified approach to address the multifaceted challenges faced by Hinjawadi. “Collaboration between PMRDA, MIDC, and other stakeholders is crucial to ensure the successful implementation of infrastructure projects,” added Rathod.

As the monsoon season approaches, the residents of Hinjawadi remain hopeful yet cautious. While the recent inspection signifies a step towards addressing the area’s infrastructure issues, the true test will be in the timely and effective execution of the proposed measures. Only time will tell if these efforts will alleviate the longstanding challenges faced by this vital IT hub.
