PMPML Proposes New Bus Terminal At Hadapsar Railway Station Site

Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) is pushing for the development of a full-fledged bus terminal adjacent to the station. The proposed facility is expected to address the sharp rise in footfall and improve multimodal integration within the city’s eastern corridor. Officials from PMPML, accompanied by senior railway representatives, recently visited the proposed site to assess feasibility and identify challenges. The public transport body has formally requested space allocation from the railways for constructing a dedicated terminal and a parking facility. This new node is expected to enable PMPML to launch direct and frequent services from Hadapsar Railway Station to key urban centres across Pune.

Currently, the area is served by limited PMPML services, including a shuttle (Route 156) connecting Hadapsar Gadital with the railway station. Additionally, buses on routes 160, 168, and 169 provide partial coverage. However, narrow internal roads and a lack of structured infrastructure have hindered efficient operations and reduced commuter convenience. PMPML leadership confirmed that securing land near the railway premises will pave the way for streamlined service and potentially reduce dependence on private vehicles for station access. Officials noted that the new terminal will prioritise sustainable transport integration and passenger convenience, in alignment with Pune’s green mobility vision.

The Hadapsar station, undergoing capacity upgrades to accommodate more long-distance trains, has seen increasing passenger volumes. Transport experts believe that without a dedicated bus terminal, this growth could worsen congestion and undermine last-mile connectivity goals. They argue that multimodal transport hubs are essential in transitioning Indian cities towards equitable, low-emission mobility ecosystems. The proposed bus terminal project reflects a larger push by the Pune administration to establish seamless transport interchanges that can adapt to population growth while supporting zero-carbon objectives. As the PMPML awaits the railway’s response, civic officials remain optimistic that inter-agency collaboration will fast-track the project, setting a precedent for integrated urban transport infrastructure in the region.
