The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to construct a new water treatment plant at Vadgaon Budruk.
This initiative, backed by the Union government’s AMRUT 2.0 programme, underscores the city’s commitment to sustainable urban infrastructure. Pune’s rapid urbanisation, coupled with the merger of 34 villages into the municipal limits, has led to an increased demand for potable water. The existing water treatment facilities, particularly the 54-year-old Parvati plant, are struggling to meet the city’s needs. The Parvati plant, with a capacity of 350 MLD, has been operational for over five decades, and its structural integrity has deteriorated over time. The PMC has initiated plans to phase out this aging facility and replace it with more efficient systems.
The new 125 MLD capacity plant at Vadgaon Budruk is poised to alleviate pressure on existing infrastructure and cater to the needs of areas such as Sinhagad Road, Satara Road, and Solapur Road. This strategic location ensures that the plant can serve both newly merged villages and established city zones, promoting equitable water distribution. The estimated cost of the Vadgaon Budruk water treatment plant is Rs 188 crore. The project will be funded under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, with the Union government contributing a significant portion of the funds. The PMC is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the plant, ensuring its long-term sustainability.
The plant’s design incorporates modern technology to enhance water purification processes, reduce energy consumption, and minimise environmental impact. By adopting eco-friendly practices, the PMC aims to align with its broader goals of creating a zero-net carbon, sustainable urban environment. The Vadgaon Budruk plant will integrate seamlessly with the city’s existing water supply network. The raw water source for this plant is the same as that of the Parvati plant, allowing for efficient utilisation of resources. The phased closure of the Parvati facility will be complemented by the increased capacity of the new plant, ensuring a smooth transition without disrupting water supply to residents.
Additionally, the PMC plans to demolish the outdated pump house at Vadgaon, which has been non-functional for years, and replace it with a modern raw water pumping station. This upgrade will enhance the efficiency of water distribution and reduce operational challenges. The establishment of the Vadgaon Budruk water treatment plant is expected to have a transformative impact on Pune’s water supply system. By expanding treatment capacity and modernising infrastructure, the PMC is taking proactive steps to meet the city’s growing needs. The project also aligns with the broader objectives of the AMRUT 2.0 programme, which focuses on rejuvenating urban infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.
