PMC Mulls Over Pay-and-Park Scheme on Select Roads

The civic body is once again exploring the possibility of implementing a pay-and-
park scheme to decongest the city's roads. It had earlier mooted the proposal in
2018 for implementation on a pilot basis on five roads, but did not see the light of
day. Many citizens had then opposed the idea, citing inadequacy of public
transport. But now, with options available for mass public transport, such as the
Metro, traffic experts said it was the right time to start paid parking.

The pay-and-park scheme will bring discipline to commuters. Many people park
vehicles on road, just because it is free. The vehicles remain parked for several
hours and days. This practice can be curbed if charges are introduced.

According to the PMC officials, the decision on selecting the roads for the pilot
project would be taken only after the new elected body takes charge. The PMC is
in talks with the city police regarding implementation of the pay-and-park scheme
on select roads in various areas.

The civic administration has conducted a survey of various roads to check parking
trends and available space for two- and four-wheelers. Based on the survey, three
zones have been identified for implementing parking charges for two- and four-
wheelers.
