PMC Launches Road Mitra App To Track And Fix Road Complaints

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced a new digital tool designed to tackle the city’s perennial road infrastructure challenges. The “Pune Road Mitra” app is a mobile application that empowers citizens to directly report and track road damage, including potholes, footpaths, and cycle tracks. This initiative marks a strategic shift from traditional reactive maintenance to a more proactive, citizen-led model, and is a critical step in building a more equitable and eco-friendly city. The app’s launch aligns with the city’s broader agenda of fostering sustainable urban mobility and enhancing public participation.

The app’s operational design is rooted in accountability and efficiency. When a user logs a complaint, they are required to upload a photo or video from the site. This action automatically registers the geo-position of the issue, eliminating ambiguity and ensuring accuracy. The complaint is then instantly routed to the civic engineer responsible for that specific area, while simultaneously being logged with their superiors. This streamlined process not only accelerates the repair cycle but also creates a clear chain of command, ensuring that no complaint is lost in bureaucratic channels. By leveraging technology, the civic body is building a digital infrastructure that directly links resident feedback to on-ground action, a hallmark of modern, sustainable urban management.

The introduction of this app is particularly pertinent during the monsoon season, when roads are most susceptible to damage, leading to traffic congestion and safety hazards. By enabling rapid reporting and repair, the initiative directly contributes to the city’s zero net carbon goals. Smoother roads mean less vehicular idling, reduced fuel consumption, and lower carbon emissions. Furthermore, the focus on repairing footpaths and cycle tracks promotes non-motorised transport, encouraging citizens to choose cleaner commuting options and fostering a healthier, more active population. This reflects a holistic approach to urban planning that considers the well-being of all city dwellers, from motorists to pedestrians.

The civic body has already commenced a pre-festival campaign to ensure all roads are in optimal condition before a major local celebration. The new application complements existing technological solutions like the “road patcher” technology and dedicated road ambulance vans, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for infrastructure maintenance. This integrated approach demonstrates a clear commitment to leveraging every available tool to enhance urban liveability. The app stands as a powerful testament to the idea that by giving citizens a voice, a city can not only solve its immediate problems but also lay the groundwork for a more collaborative, sustainable, and equitable future for all.
