PMC Issues Warning on Pre-Monsoon Tree Felling: Compliance Guidelines Unveiled

In a bid to mitigate risks associated with heavy rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a directive mandating prior permission for pruning or cutting trees in private areas.

The garden department of PMC has cautioned against hasty tree felling and urged citizens to obtain proper authorisation before undertaking any tree-related activities that could pose a hazard during inclement weather conditions. The directive underscores the importance of proactive measures to prevent accidents and property damage caused by falling trees and branches during cyclonic rainfall events. PMC’s garden department emphasises the necessity of removing trees and branches susceptible to falling before the onset of the monsoon season to ensure public safety and facilitate unhindered traffic movement. According to the guidelines outlined by the garden department, citizens must seek permission from the tree authority before pruning or cutting trees on private premises. Complaints regarding potentially hazardous trees can be raised with the tree authority, which will then instruct tree officers in each ward to take appropriate action. Additionally, citizens have the option to report concerns about tree safety to the PMC through its official website or by contacting the fire brigade department.

The Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, enacted in 1975, mandates periodic census of existing trees within PMC’s jurisdiction. The act also stipulates the constitution of a tree authority, chaired by the PMC commissioner, to oversee tree-related matters and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Violations of tree protection laws can result in significant penalties, including fines up to ₹10,000 and imprisonment ranging from one to three months. PMC’s proactive approach to enforcing tree regulations underscores its commitment to safeguarding urban greenery and promoting environmental conservation initiatives. By emphasising the importance of obtaining prior permissions for tree-related activities, PMC aims to raise awareness about responsible tree management practices and foster a culture of compliance among citizens. The regulatory measures implemented by PMC are geared towards enhancing public safety, preserving green spaces, and promoting sustainable urban development in Pune.
