Prime Minister on Wednesday unveiled a comprehensive slate of infrastructure and public welfare projects spanning West Bengal, Bihar, and Sikkim.
Designed to energise Eastern India’s development trajectory, the multi-sectoral investments signal a strategic shift towards strengthening logistics, healthcare, education, and sustainable tourism in historically underfunded states. The latest round of inaugurations and foundation-laying ceremonies reflect the Centre’s renewed commitment to equitable national development, with particular emphasis on improving public services and catalysing local economies in the East. The projects are positioned as crucial cogs in the larger national vision to transform India into a $5 trillion economy while ensuring that growth reaches the last mile.
In West Bengal, the Prime Minister inaugurated a critical transport corridor — a multi-lane highway linking Kolkata to Durgapur. This strategic route is expected to drastically cut down travel time and enhance trade and freight movement between industrial and logistics hubs, offering direct benefits to micro, small, and medium enterprises operating in the region. Officials confirmed that the project will not only improve connectivity but also reduce vehicular emissions by streamlining traffic flow and lowering fuel consumption — aligning with India’s net-zero carbon ambitions. Further strengthening the region’s academic infrastructure, the Prime Minister also inaugurated a Central University in North Bengal. Featuring state-of-the-art classrooms, modern laboratories, and digital learning environments, the university is set to serve as a centre of excellence for higher education. Experts noted that it will widen access to quality education for students in underrepresented districts and serve as a catalyst for regional intellectual capital development.
In his address, the Prime Minister stated that “the classrooms of today shape the destiny of tomorrow”, reiterating that human capital is the foundation for long-term national competitiveness. Bihar, long grappling with inadequate healthcare access, received a major upgrade with the launch of a new AIIMS campus in Darbhanga. The institute is expected to emerge as a tertiary care centre for North Bihar, offering both medical education and cutting-edge treatment to underserved populations. The facility will also support advanced medical research and attract health professionals to the state, where outmigration for treatment has historically strained family incomes and public health systems.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a 200-km greenfield highway connecting Patna to Gaya. Besides reducing travel time, this corridor is expected to boost religious and cultural tourism around the Buddhist circuit, which includes globally renowned heritage sites. Officials from the Ministry of Road Transport indicated that the corridor would be designed with green construction practices and integrated rest stops promoting local crafts and sustainable retail. Another milestone for Bihar was the launch of a large-scale rural electrification scheme, set to bring grid power to over 1,000 previously unconnected villages. The initiative is expected to significantly impact local livelihoods, education, and health services by enabling extended operational hours and reducing dependence on diesel generators.
In Sikkim, the government’s approach to development carried a distinct focus on sustainability and future-readiness. The Prime Minister inaugurated an eco-tourism park near Gangtok, co-developed with community participation and designed to showcase the region’s biodiversity. By integrating conservation with local employment opportunities, the park is being seen as a model for green tourism that respects ecological limits while uplifting local incomes. The state also witnessed the launch of a digital innovation hub at Sikkim University. The hub aims to promote entrepreneurship among youth and support early-stage tech startups. Featuring incubation cells, training labs, and mentorship programs, the facility will focus on climate tech, rural fintech, and agritech solutions tailored for hilly terrains.
Officials emphasised that these initiatives demonstrate a long-term strategy of embedding sustainability, innovation, and equity into regional development plans. “Our aim is Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas — development with everyone’s participation and benefit,” the Prime Minister said during his address in Gangtok, underscoring the government’s commitment to balanced federalism. Analysts believe that the timing of these announcements — ahead of monsoon season and amid increasing demand for job-generating infrastructure — is designed to create both immediate and long-term socioeconomic value. The cross-sectoral investments also signal the Centre’s willingness to engage with diverse stakeholders including local governments, civil society, and the private sector.
With projects ranging from smart infrastructure and rural electrification to eco-tourism and digital entrepreneurship, the development blueprint for Eastern India reflects a pragmatic blend of ambition and inclusivity.
