PM to Dedicate Udaipur Himmatnagar Railway Electrification
Prime Minister will dedicate the electrification of the 210-kilometre Udaipur–Himmatnagar railway line to the nation on May 22 at a special event in Rajasthan.
The project is part of a wider effort to electrify India’s railway network and reflects the government’s commitment to energy-efficient, high-speed connectivity. This development comes on the heels of Gujarat achieving 100 percent electrification of its broad gauge railway lines — a milestone the state reached earlier this year. The state’s entire 4,027-kilometre rail network, under the Western Railway division, is now electrified, a dramatic increase from just 785 kilometres in 2014. The Udaipur–Himmatnagar line, which connects southern Rajasthan with northern Gujarat, is a strategic route in the regional rail matrix. Electrification is expected to reduce dependence on diesel locomotives, lower carbon emissions, and enable faster trains to operate across the corridor. This includes the potential introduction of Vande Bharat trains, which could link Gujarat with the popular tourist destination of Udaipur. Railway officials say the electrified corridor will significantly improve regional mobility while aligning with the Indian Railways’ sustainability goals. It also supports the Centre’s broader strategy to transition to a fully electrified and carbon-neutral rail network by 2030.
With this addition, Gujarat joins a select group of 25 Indian states that have completed railway electrification. Remaining states like Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Assam have only minor sections pending. Indian Railways aims to complete the remaining 811 kilometres of unelectrified lines nationwide within the next two years. The Udaipur–Himmatnagar line plays a dual role in enhancing both economic and tourism-linked transport. It is expected to ease logistics for freight movement and improve travel convenience for passengers commuting between the two states. The inauguration on May 22 will be part of a larger programme celebrating multiple electrification achievements across the country. The event is likely to spotlight the central government’s ongoing infrastructure drive aimed at boosting green mobility, regional integration, and energy efficiency.
With Indian Railways targeting net-zero emissions, the Udaipur–Himmatnagar electrification stands as a testament to accelerating efforts toward climate-conscious infrastructure while improving connectivity across India’s transport backbone.
