PM Modi to Inaugurate Worlds Tallest Railway Bridge on June 6

On June 6, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure development.

Standing at 359 metres above the Chenab River, the bridge surpasses the height of the Eiffel Tower by 35 metres, earning it the title of the world’s highest railway bridge. This engineering marvel is a pivotal component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), a project aimed at enhancing connectivity between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley. Spanning 1,315 metres, the Chenab Bridge is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, including wind speeds up to 266 km/h and temperatures ranging from -10°C to 40°C. Constructed with 28,660 metric tonnes of steel and 66,000 cubic metres of concrete, the bridge features a 550-metre-long curvilinear arch and 17 spans.

The arch itself weighs approximately 10,619 metric tonnes. Built to last, the bridge is expected to have a lifespan of 120 years. The construction of the bridge was a formidable challenge due to the rugged terrain of the Reasi district. Engineers employed advanced techniques and materials to ensure the bridge’s stability and durability. The project was executed by a joint venture comprising VSL India, Afcons Infrastructure, and Ultra Construction, under the supervision of Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd.

The inauguration of the Chenab Bridge is not just a testament to India’s engineering capabilities but also a symbol of the nation’s commitment to improving infrastructure and connectivity. By linking the Kashmir Valley to the broader Indian railway network, the bridge is expected to boost regional development, facilitate trade, and promote tourism. It stands as a beacon of progress and a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the Indian people.
