Kolkata is poised for a significant upgrade in urban mobility as Prime Minister prepares to inaugurate three new metro routes on August 22. The launch marks a pivotal expansion of the city’s rapid transit network, aimed at enhancing connectivity across key corridors and providing residents with faster, more sustainable commuting options. Officials confirmed that the event also includes the inauguration of a new subway at Howrah metro station, further integrating the network.
The newly commissioned routes comprise the final stretch of the East-West Metro (Green Line) from Sealdah to Esplanade, completing a crucial link for east-west commuters. The Orange Line will extend services from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing) to Beleghata, adding four new stations, while the Yellow Line will connect Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar, establishing the city’s first direct metro access to the airport with four additional stations. Railway authorities highlighted that these expansions are expected to significantly reduce travel time for residents across Kolkata and its suburbs. Noapara station, strategically linked to the southern parts of the city via the Blue Line to Kavi Subhash, will become an important interchange hub. Dum Dum Cantonment station, situated near the Sealdah–Bongaon railway section, will further improve regional connectivity.
Officials emphasised that the metro expansion reflects a broader commitment to sustainable urban transport solutions. “The new metro corridors are designed to reduce congestion and carbon emissions, offering an eco-friendly alternative to road transport,” said a senior Metro official. State-of-the-art passenger amenities have been incorporated at the newly built stations, including elevators, seating arrangements, and multiple ticket counters to enhance commuter convenience. The event has also drawn attention to its political dimensions. The invitation extended to the West Bengal Chief Minister underscores the Centre’s collaborative approach to state-level infrastructure projects, even amid differing political narratives. Local leaders acknowledged the invitation while discussing ongoing challenges, including land acquisition hurdles that have delayed certain projects.
Rail safety officials recently conducted comprehensive inspections along the Yellow Line stretch from Dum Dum Cantonment to Jai Hind Bimanbandar, confirming the readiness of tracks, trains, and emergency systems. Their approval signals that these new services will soon be operational, offering residents a reliable and modern mode of travel. With this inauguration, Kolkata is set to witness a transformative shift in public transport, combining speed, sustainability, and accessibility. These additions are expected to ease traffic congestion, promote greener commuting, and position the metro network as the backbone of the city’s urban mobility strategy.
